Saptapadi series

In a Hindu marriage, the wedding couple takes seven steps, called the Saptapadi, around a sacred fire while making seven vows. I took these steps and made these vows over 35 years ago when I married my husband, a native of South India. This was my first introduction to the Hindu culture of my new family. Over time, I have come to appreciate both the ancient traditions and modern progress of this complex, diverse culture. I interpret my understanding of the Saptapadi and my experience of Indian culture in this series of mixed media paintings.

To create the series, I researched the symbols, imagery and cultural traditions of India. My working process involves layering and obscuring plaster, paint, brass and wax on wood panels to produce a depth and texture reminiscent of worn fabric, tarnished brass and burnished surfaces.
